Ucchan Nanchan no Yarunara Yaraneba! Nanma-kun

Nanma-kun emerged from the influential early 1990s Japanese variety show Ucchan Nanchan no Yarunara Yaraneba!, produced by Fuji Television. The character was a parody figure brought to life by the comedy duo Ucchan Nanchan, serving as a satirical take on the era's fascination with occult and supernatural media. The accompanying print materials and tie-in volumes, illustrated by Mizutani Kennosuke, helped translate the chaotic, sketch-based humor of the television show into a static, collectible format for the youth market.

Mizutani Kennosuke’s visual design for the series leaned into the exaggerated, expressive style characteristic of contemporary gag manga. The character's aesthetic was carefully calibrated to capture the absurd energy of the show’s scripts, emphasizing slapstick visual cues and memorable character silhouettes. While the show itself was short-lived, the character remains a noted piece of Japanese television memorabilia, reflecting the deep integration between prime-time variety entertainment and licensed publishing in Japan during the Heisei era.
