Where it came from
Udon no Kuni no Kin'iro Kemari, known in English as Poco's Udon World, began as a manga series written and illustrated by Shinomaru Nodoka, serialized in Shinchosha's Monthly Comic @Bunch starting in 2012. The narrative centers on a man who returns to his hometown in Kagawa Prefecture, known for its udon noodles, and encounters a young tanuki that possesses the ability to transform into a human boy. The work serves as a heartwarming exploration of familial bonds, tradition, and the quiet beauty of rural Japanese life.
The series is noted for its gentle art style and atmospheric depiction of Kagawa's local culture, which Shinomaru Nodoka utilized to ground the fantastical elements of the story in a realistic setting. Following the manga's positive reception for its emotional resonance and regional specificity, it was adapted into a twelve-episode anime series by Liden Films in 2016. Both the source material and its adaptation are frequently cited for their soothing, 'iyashikei' tone, which focuses on characters finding peace and resolution in everyday experiences.
