Where it came from
UMA is a manga series created by the mangaka known as Tunamasa, emerging within the niche landscape of Japanese supernatural and cryptid-themed comics. The work is defined by its focus on 'Unidentified Mysterious Animals'—a term commonly abbreviated as UMA in Japan—integrating folkloric investigation with a distinct visual style that balances eerie atmospheric tension with creature design.
The series reflects a broader trend in independent or experimental manga that seeks to document and dramatize urban legends. Tunamasa’s approach to the subject matter is noted for a grounded, observational tone, prioritizing the mystery and existential curiosity surrounding these creatures rather than traditional shonen-style action, which has earned it a dedicated following among enthusiasts of cryptid fiction.
