Where it came from
Umehara FIGHTING GAMERS! is a biographical manga series that chronicles the life and career of Daigo Umehara, a legendary figure in the professional fighting game community. The narrative explores his formative years in the Japanese arcade scene of the 1990s, focusing on the cultural landscape of game centers and the intense rivalries that fueled the rise of Street Fighter II as a competitive phenomenon. The series serves as both a historical record of the era and a character study of a dedicated professional player.
Illustrated by Orisaka Itaru, the manga adopts a dynamic, high-energy art style designed to translate the frantic pace of competitive gaming onto the page. The series was serialized in Kadokawa's Young Ace magazine, aiming to capture the tension of high-level matches while providing context for Umehara's disciplined approach to competition. It is generally regarded by the gaming community as an authentic portrayal of the early esports environment and the personal evolution of one of the industry's most recognizable icons.
