UnBalance Zone

UnBalance Zone is a collection of short stories authored by Usui Yoshito, best known as the creator of Crayon Shin-chan. Published in the early 1990s, the collection stands apart from his famous comedic works by showcasing his versatility through the lens of psychological horror, dark fantasy, and surrealism. It emerged during a period where Usui was experimenting with narratives that leaned into the bizarre and the unsettling, capturing a distinct atmosphere of urban malaise prevalent in manga anthologies of that era.

The design and content of the volume reflect a departure from the slapstick humor of his mainstream success, focusing instead on character-driven vignettes that explore the vulnerabilities of the human condition. While the collection was overshadowed by the massive cultural footprint of his long-running series, it is well-regarded by collectors and fans of seinen manga for its unique insight into Usui’s range as an illustrator and storyteller. It remains a notable example of how established mangaka of the time utilized short-form anthologies to challenge stylistic expectations.
