Where it came from
Unigon is a surrealist manga series conceptualized and illustrated by Midori Jen, emerging from the experimental independent publishing scene in the early 2000s. The work was created as a stylistic exploration of creature design, blending biological anatomical studies with abstract, dreamlike motifs that challenged the conventions of traditional shonen and seinen aesthetics at the time.
The series is noted for its sparse dialogue and intricate, cross-hatched linework, a deliberate choice by Jen to prioritize visual storytelling over overt narrative exposition. While it initially saw a niche release among underground art collectives, it garnered a dedicated following for its haunting, otherworldly atmosphere and remains a respected example of independent Japanese visual arts.
