Where it came from
UnOrdinary began as a digital webtoon created by the artist known as uru-chan, originally debuting on the WEBTOON platform in 2016. The story explores a high-stakes hierarchical society where individuals are ranked by their supernatural abilities, centered on the character John Doe. Due to its significant popularity and millions of views online, the series was eventually adapted into a physical graphic novel format to reach traditional bookstore audiences.
The physical edition maintains uru-chan's distinct art style, which balances high-action sequences with the nuanced social dynamics of Wellston Private High School. The design process for the book version focused on translating the infinite-scrolling vertical webtoon format into a cohesive printed layout. Critics and readers have generally received the work as a pivotal entry in the modern webcomic-to-print movement, praised for its exploration of morality, power structures, and character development.
