Where it came from
The Urzędowy wykaz druków, translated as the Official Register of Printed Matter, was established as a bibliographic record of works published within the Republic of Poland. Serving as a crucial component of the nation's legal deposit system, these volumes were compiled by the National Library of Poland to ensure comprehensive documentation of the country's intellectual and cultural output. The register acted as an authoritative national bibliography, tracking the flow of books, periodicals, and ephemera as they entered the public sphere.
The design of these volumes reflects a utilitarian approach typical of mid-20th-century institutional record-keeping. The structure follows rigorous bibliographic standards, prioritizing clarity and ease of reference for librarians and researchers. While the design is strictly functional rather than artistic, it was received by the academic community as an essential archival tool, providing a necessary historical map of Polish publishing during a period of significant social and political transformation.
