Where it came from
Ushiro no Seki no Katou-kun, written and illustrated by Miso Umeda, began serialization in 2012 within the pages of Monthly Comic Alive. The manga is a slice-of-life comedy centered on the premise of a student who constantly engages in bizarre, elaborate antics from his seat at the back of the classroom, often to the bafflement or amusement of those around him. It fits into the 'school life' subgenre of manga, focusing on observational humor and the mundane chaos of secondary education.
The design of the work leans into expressive character-based humor, utilizing simple, clean lines to emphasize the physical comedy of the protagonist's disruptions. It was received as a lighthearted, episodic title typical of the mid-2010s manga landscape, where focus was placed on high-concept, single-room settings. The series captured a modest but dedicated audience who appreciated the absurdity of its recurring sketches and the straightforward, relatable student dynamics presented by Umeda.
