Where it came from
Usotoki Rhetoric is a historical mystery manga series written and illustrated by Miyako Ritsu. First serialized in Shogakukan's Bessatsu Hana to Yume from 2012 to 2018, the story is set in the early Showa era of Japan. It follows Urabe Kanoko, a young woman who possesses the supernatural ability to hear when people are lying, and Iwai Souma, an impoverished detective who partners with her to solve local mysteries. The series explores themes of truth, perception, and human nature against the backdrop of a rapidly modernizing society.
Miyako Ritsu is celebrated for her delicate, classical art style and her ability to weave complex puzzles into the gentle atmosphere of the period. By centering the narrative on the tension between societal facades and Kanoko's unwelcome gift, the work provides a thoughtful critique of deception within interpersonal relationships. The series has been well-regarded for its atmospheric world-building and character development, eventually receiving a live-action television adaptation that further elevated its recognition among fans of the historical mystery genre.
