Where it came from
Usotsuki Non-chan, Jigoku ni Ochiro is a manga series by Saho Yamamoto, an artist widely recognized for her poignant and humorous essays on childhood memories and everyday life. The work emerged from the mid-2010s Japanese digital manga landscape, where personal, episodic storytelling gained significant traction. Yamamoto utilized a distinctively clean, approachable art style to contrast with the often unsettling or darkly comedic psychological elements present in her narrative themes.
The series focuses on the titular character, Non-chan, exploring the complexities of childhood social dynamics, honesty, and the inherent cruelty that can manifest in youth. Critics and readers noted that Yamamoto’s work functions as both a nostalgic reflection and a critique of the harsh realities of peer groups. It was received as a significant entry in her body of work, praised for its ability to navigate heavy emotional territory without losing the accessible visual shorthand that defines her broader bibliography.
