Utsu Utsu Hideo Diary

Utsu Utsu Hideo Diary, first published in 2005, serves as a poignant autobiographical manga by Hideo Azuma. It documents the author's struggle with alcoholism, his period of homelessness as a 'salaryman-turned-vagrant,' and his eventual rehabilitation. The work emerged from a deeply personal place, stripping away the conventions of his previous gag manga career to provide a raw, unflinching look at the realities of social withdrawal and survival on the fringes of Japanese society.

The design and narrative approach reflect Azuma's signature minimalist style, which contrasts sharply with the grim subject matter of his experiences. By utilizing a deceptively simple, often humorous artistic tone to frame harrowing events, Azuma created a work that garnered critical acclaim, winning the Grand Prize in the Manga Division at the 2005 Japan Media Arts Festival and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. It is widely regarded as a seminal text in the genre of autobiographical manga for its honesty and humanistic perspective.
