Where it came from
Uzumaki was written and illustrated by Junji Ito and originally serialized in the weekly manga magazine Big Comic Spirits between 1998 and 1999. The story centers on the fictional town of Kurouzu-cho, which becomes afflicted by a supernatural curse involving spirals, manifesting in both the environment and the physical bodies of the inhabitants. Ito, a former dental technician, drew inspiration from his fascination with body horror and the uncanny, aiming to turn an innocuous geometric shape into a source of pervasive, existential dread.
The work is widely regarded as a seminal contribution to the horror manga genre. Following its serialization, it was collected into three tankobon volumes by Shogakukan and has since seen numerous international editions.
