Where it came from
Vagabond, Volume 36, is part of the long-running seinen manga series written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue. Based on Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi, the series serves as a fictionalized retelling of the life of legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Inoue began the serialization in 1998, aiming to explore the philosophy of the sword and the inner growth of his protagonist through highly detailed, expressive brushwork.
This specific volume continues the series' transition into a slower, more meditative pace as the narrative focuses on Musashi's life as a farmer. Inoue’s departure from traditional action-heavy battle manga towards a more painterly, character-driven aesthetic was highly acclaimed by critics for its artistic maturity. The Viz Media English release maintains the high production standards expected of the series, preserving Inoue's original ink-wash style and intricate panel layouts.
