Vampire Hunter D: Message from Mars

Vampire Hunter D: Message from Mars originated as a collaborative effort to bring Hideyuki Kikuchi’s iconic gothic horror series to a Western graphic novel format. Released in 2016, the project was developed by Unified Pictures, with the narrative penned by Brandon M. Easton. The intent was to capture the atmospheric, post-apocalyptic blend of science fiction and vampire lore that had defined the franchise since its inception in the early 1980s, acting as a prequel to the legendary narrative while remaining accessible to new readers.

The visual design of the volume was helmed by artist Michael Broussard, who sought to translate the intricate, melancholic aesthetic of the original illustrations into a modern sequential art style. The work was generally well-received by fans of the series for its fidelity to the tone of the source material, though it serves primarily as a bridge for Western audiences to engage with the long-running Vampire Hunter D legacy, balancing the gothic sensibilities of the past with contemporary pacing.
