Venetia was originally published in 1837 during a prolific period for Benjamin Disraeli, who was already a well-established novelist before his ascent to British political prominence. The narrative is a fictionalized account of the lives of the poets Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley, reimagined as the characters Marmion Herbert and Lord Cadurcis. Disraeli sought to explore the tensions between romantic idealism and the practical demands of aristocratic society, creating a work that reflected his own complex relationship with the literary and political elite of nineteenth-century England.

The Primrose Edition represents the later efforts by publishers to repackage Disraeli's backlist for a Victorian reading public that increasingly valued complete library sets of recognized authors.
