Verhalen voor de jeugd: Hans en zijn schimmel

Verhalen voor de jeugd, or Stories for Youth, represents a long-standing tradition of 19th-century moralizing literature intended for the intellectual and character development of children. This specific volume, featuring the tale of Hans en zijn schimmel, belongs to a series of translations and adaptations of German pedagogical fiction, commonly attributed to the prolific author Franz Hoffmann. Hoffmann was a central figure in the mid-1800s German literary scene, known for his ability to weave Christian values and cautionary life lessons into narratives accessible to a young readership.

The publication of such volumes served the burgeoning demand for affordable, edifying books in the Netherlands during the late 19th century. The aesthetic design of the series typically featured modest, didactic cover art intended to reflect the seriousness of the content within. While the original German editions were widely disseminated across Europe, the Dutch translations played an essential role in integrating these popular moral tales into the educational landscape of the period, meeting the era's preference for literature that favored social discipline and virtue.
