Verlustlisten der österr. Süd- und Nordarmee im Feldzuge vom Jahre 1866: geordnet nach officiellen Angaben. “Die” Südarmee

This volume serves as a somber administrative record documenting the casualties of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. Published in the immediate aftermath of the conflict, these lists were compiled to provide a definitive account of the losses sustained by the Austrian Southern and Northern armies. The work was commissioned as an official government publication to organize the scattered reports from the front lines, ensuring that the heavy toll of the battlefield was officially acknowledged within the bureaucracy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The publication is characterized by a stark, utilitarian design intended for clarity and reference rather than aesthetic appeal. By structuring the data according to regimental affiliation and military divisions, the compilers aimed to create an accessible archival tool for state officials and surviving families. While the work received little public commentary at the time of its release, it remains a vital primary source for military historians studying the tactical failures and human cost of the 1866 campaign.
