Vespa History- Virginia Burns

The Vespa History volume by Virginia Burns was published in 2020 as a concise historical exploration of the iconic Italian motor scooter brand. It belongs to a niche category of independent publications aimed at providing enthusiasts with a chronological overview of the marque, which originated in the post-World War II era as a practical solution to Italy's transportation needs. The work serves as a retrospective on the design evolution of the Vespa, emphasizing its transition from a utilitarian necessity to a global symbol of mid-century aesthetics.

The book focuses on the historical narrative of the Piaggio company and the creative vision of Corradino D'Ascanio, the aeronautical engineer who designed the first Vespa. Burns frames the history through the lens of sociocultural shifts, illustrating how the scooter became synonymous with the 'Dolce Vita' era and its influence on global pop culture. It is intended as a accessible reference point for those interested in industrial design history rather than a technical manual, and it reflects the sustained public fascination with the Vespa's enduring visual identity.
