Where it came from
John Hankins Wallace began publishing the American Trotting Register in the 1870s to formalize the pedigree and performance records of the American Standardbred horse. At a time when the breeding of trotting horses was becoming a highly organized industry in the United States, Wallace sought to replace unreliable local knowledge with a systematic, centralized database that strictly defined the lineage required to qualify as a trotter.
The volumes were designed as meticulous reference tools, reflecting the Victorian obsession with genealogical accuracy and breed purity. Wallace’s work served as the foundation for the National Association of Trotting Horse Breeders, and despite intense controversy during his tenure regarding his standards for inclusion, the Register successfully established the modern framework for the American Standardbred stud book that persists to this day.
