Wangan Midnight: C1 Runner

Wangan Midnight: C1 Runner is a spin-off volume derived from the long-running Wangan Midnight series created by mangaka Michiharu Kusunoki. Following the success of the original manga, which chronicled high-speed illegal street racing on Tokyo's Shuto Expressway, this iteration shifts the focus to the C1 Loop, a notorious section of the city's urban highway. The work retains the signature mechanical detail and philosophical obsession with automotive engineering that characterized the main series, reflecting the author's deep personal interest in car culture and the unique camaraderie found within Japan's drifting and racing subcultures.

The aesthetic of C1 Runner aligns with the grit and kinetic energy established in Kusunoki’s earlier works, utilizing sharp, deliberate linework to capture the tension of high-speed maneuvers. Upon its release, the volume was received as a stylistic companion to the core saga, appealing primarily to existing enthusiasts of the franchise who sought deeper narrative dives into specific segments of Tokyo's infrastructure. It remains a testament to the specific sub-genre of racing manga that flourished during the late 20th and early 21st centuries, documenting an era of street racing that has since become a significant element of Japanese popular culture.
