War and Manga: Human Torpedo Kaiten

War and Manga: Human Torpedo Kaiten, authored by Sagara Shunsuke, belongs to a genre of post-war Japanese literature and graphic narratives that sought to document the experiences of soldiers and suicide squadrons during the Second World War. Created to provide a visceral, accessible account of the Imperial Japanese Navy's kaiten suicide torpedo program, the work reflects the somber cultural reckoning that emerged as veterans began to share their wartime memories through the increasingly popular medium of manga.

Sagara Shunsuke was known for his dedication to historical realism and the grim documentation of military life. In this volume, his illustration style leans toward the stark and unvarnished, prioritizing historical accuracy over stylized action to capture the existential weight of the kaiten pilots. The work was received as a sobering addition to the sub-genre of war manga, serving as both a historical record for later generations and a somber reflection on the human cost of the Pacific conflict.
