Watashi ga Watashi wo Uru Riyuu

Watashi ga Watashi wo Uru Riyuu, written and illustrated by Natsuko Kyu, emerged within the contemporary Japanese josei manga landscape. The series focuses on the complex intersection of personal identity, professional life, and the societal pressures placed upon women in modern urban settings. It serves as a narrative examination of how individuals commodify aspects of their personality or work to navigate the expectations of the Japanese corporate and social hierarchy.

Kyu’s design and illustrative style lean into the character-driven aesthetic typical of modern josei works, prioritizing introspective facial expressions and minimalist environments to emphasize the internal monologue of the protagonist. Upon its release, the series was noted for its nuanced approach to themes of self-worth and autonomy, finding a receptive audience among readers looking for grounded, relatable portrayals of the anxieties associated with adult life and interpersonal performance.
