Where it came from
Watashi no Shounen, written and illustrated by Hitomi Takano, was first serialized in Kodansha's seinen magazine Monthly Afternoon in 2016. The story explores the complex, non-romantic bond that develops between Satoko, a thirty-year-old single woman, and Mashuu, a twelve-year-old boy she meets at a park. The series is celebrated for its delicate, nuanced approach to themes of loneliness, healing, and the blurred lines between maternal affection and platonic friendship.
Takano's artistic style is defined by soft, atmospheric linework and a quiet, contemplative pacing that mirrors the emotional states of its protagonists. Upon its release, the manga received critical acclaim for its sensitive treatment of a potentially controversial premise, successfully avoiding sensationalism in favor of an earnest study of human connection. It has garnered a dedicated following for its sophisticated character studies and atmospheric storytelling.
