Where it came from
Watashi wa Tsumami wo Akiramenai! is a niche manga series authored by Ohara Yoshitsugu, emerging from the vibrant landscape of Japanese gag and slice-of-life manga. The series focuses on the humorous, often relatable struggles surrounding the consumption and appreciation of tsumami, the Japanese appetizers typically served with alcoholic beverages. Its creation was rooted in a desire to elevate the cultural appreciation of casual dining rituals through a comedic lens, capturing the eccentric personalities found in local izakayas.
The design of the work leans heavily into expressive, caricatured character art that emphasizes reactions and sensory details. Yoshitsugu utilized a kinetic, fast-paced paneling style to mirror the frantic energy of culinary discovery. Upon its release, the volume was received as a lighthearted commentary on modern social habits, finding a steady, dedicated readership among fans who appreciate thematic manga centered on specific lifestyle subcultures.
