Without Loss, Even in the Rain

Without Loss, Even in the Rain, or Ame ni mo Makezu, represents a distinct illustrative interpretation of Kenji Miyazawa's seminal 1931 poem. Created by the veteran manga artist Kawasaki Noboru, the work translates the spare, stoic spirit of Miyazawa's original text into a visual language that emphasizes the humble, persistent nature of the narrator. Kawasaki, already well-regarded for his dynamic storytelling in sports and action manga, pivoted here toward a more contemplative and atmospheric aesthetic to capture the poem's themes of self-sacrifice and resilience.

The volume was developed to introduce modern readers to the endurance of Miyazawa's philosophy through accessible illustration. By centering the work on the iconic imagery of the 'person who does not lose to the rain,' Kawasaki sought to ground the abstract virtues of the poem in the recognizable, weathered visage of a simple traveler. Upon its release, the collection was received as a respectful homage to a cornerstone of Japanese literature, praised for its ability to maintain the melancholic yet hopeful tone of the original poem while providing a tactile, visual narrative for the reader.
