Wolfsmund

Wolfsmund was written and illustrated by Mitsuhisa Kuji, serializing in the Japanese magazine Harta starting in 2009. The series is a gritty historical drama set in the early 14th century, centered on the St. Gotthard Pass in the Swiss Alps, which serves as a brutal toll gate controlled by the Habsburgs. Kuji’s work is noted for its uncompromising depiction of medieval violence and the political tension between the oppressive Austrian forces and the early Swiss resistance.

The artistic style of the manga is characterized by detailed, heavy line work that emphasizes the harshness of the mountain environment and the grim reality of the period's combat. While the series draws on the legends of William Tell and the formation of the Old Swiss Confederacy, it moves away from romanticized heroism, focusing instead on the systemic cruelty of the occupation. It has been recognized for its research into period-accurate armor and weaponry, earning a reputation among readers for its bleak, impactful storytelling.
