Where it came from
World of Cultivation originated as a popular xianxia web novel written by the Chinese author Fang Xiang. It emerged during a period of rapid growth for the Chinese web fiction industry, appearing on platforms like Qidian, where it gained a significant following for its unconventional take on the genre. Unlike many stories that focus exclusively on solitary martial arts advancement, Fang Xiang introduced a meticulous focus on resource management, economy, and the logistical challenges of building a sect.
The narrative follows Zuo Mo, a memory-wiped cultivator who discovers a unique talent for nurturing spiritual plants. This premise allowed Fang Xiang to deconstruct cultivation tropes, replacing traditional power-fantasy elements with a systematic approach to cultivation that resembles business management. The series was well-received for its blend of world-building and humor, eventually leading to its translation into multiple languages and cementing its status as a staple of modern web-based fantasy literature.
