Where it came from
The Würzburger Wohnungsbuch originated as a practical administrative tool for the city of Würzburg, designed to track housing occupancy and residential distribution during the mid-20th century. These volumes were produced primarily to serve the needs of local governance, urban planning, and bureaucratic census efforts, reflecting a period of intense focus on infrastructure and postwar reconstruction within West Germany.
The design of the volume adheres to the strict functionalist aesthetic common in German administrative record-keeping of that era, prioritizing clarity, accessibility, and standardized data entry. While these books were never intended for a mass commercial audience, they are esteemed by historians and archivists as vital primary sources that offer a detailed window into the demographic and urban landscape of Würzburg during a pivotal era of modernization.
