Where it came from
Published in 1876, this volume serves as a detailed historical account and miscellany focused on the Wynnstay estate in Denbighshire, Wales, and the prominent Williams-Wynn family. It was compiled by John Askew Roberts, a notable Welsh antiquarian and printer who gained broader recognition as the author of the popular 'Gossiping Guide to Wales'. The work reflects the Victorian interest in local history, genealogy, and the landed gentry, capturing the cultural significance of the estate during a period when such regional chronicles were highly valued for their preservation of local narratives.
The book is characterized by its anecdotal and informative style, typical of Roberts's accessible approach to regional studies. By documenting the history of the Wynns, Roberts aimed to provide a comprehensive look at the influence of the family on Welsh social and political life. The volume was received as a useful resource for those interested in the topography and historical record of North Wales, standing as a testament to Roberts’s commitment to documenting Welsh heritage through his printing house in Oswestry.
