Xizi Road's Town House Beast

Xizi Road's Town House Beast, authored by Qing Xiaozui, belongs to a contemporary wave of Chinese web-serialized literature that blends traditional folklore with urban fantasy settings. The series explores the concept of spiritual guardians—known as town house beasts—who integrate into modern society. Created to resonate with a younger audience familiar with digital platform storytelling, the work prioritizes character-driven narratives set against the backdrop of rapidly evolving urban landscapes in China.

The aesthetic and thematic tone of the series is heavily influenced by the resurgence of interest in regional mythology, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Qing Xiaozui developed the narrative to bridge the gap between ancient architectural motifs, such as the stone lions or dragons traditionally placed to protect households, and the realities of modern apartment living. Upon its release, it was noted for its distinct atmospheric writing style, garnering a loyal readership within digital literary communities that prioritize world-building and folklore-inspired supernatural drama.
