Y no Kaidan-jô

Y no Kaidan-jô, or The Staircase of Y, is a seminal work within the Japanese horror manga tradition that emerged during the late 20th century. Authored by the mangaka known as Ooya, the series explores the psychological landscape of dread through a series of interconnected, eerie vignettes. The work draws heavily from the Japanese tradition of kaidan, or ghost stories, grounding its supernatural elements in domestic settings and the mundane anxieties of daily life.

Ooya’s artistic approach is characterized by stark, high-contrast panels and a deliberate pacing that builds suspense through atmosphere rather than overt gore. Upon its release, the volume was noted for its departure from mainstream shonen tropes, finding its place instead within the cult following of gekiga-influenced horror. It remains a recognized title among enthusiasts of vintage Japanese dark fantasy for its ability to transform simple architectural spaces into sites of profound unease.
