Yae no Sakura

Yae no Sakura originated as a 2013 NHK Taiga drama scripted by Mutsumi Yamamoto, centered on the life of Niijima Yae, a woman who defied the societal expectations of late Edo-period Aizu. Given the success of the television series, the narrative was adapted into a multi-volume literary series that expands upon Yae’s transition from a skilled riflewoman during the Boshin War to an educator and activist in the Meiji era. The prose work is designed to bridge historical documentation with the serialized narrative structure familiar to Taiga fans.

The publication captures the dual nature of Yae's identity, often referred to as the Jeanne d'Arc of the Bakumatsu period. The design and narrative focus emphasize the juxtaposition of traditional Japanese femininity with the rugged, martial spirit Yae cultivated to defend Aizu.
