Yakumo Tatsu: Arata

Yakumo Tatsu: Arata is a continuation of Itsuki Natsumi’s acclaimed supernatural manga series Yakumo Tatsu, originally serialized in the 1990s. This specific work emerged to revisit the complex relationship between the protagonist Kuraki Yami and the unfolding mysteries of Japanese folklore and exorcism that defined the original run. Natsumi utilized this return to the series to refine the psychological depth of her characters, framing their interactions within the atmospheric, occult-heavy storytelling that solidified her reputation as a master of the supernatural drama genre.

The aesthetic of the series remains consistent with Natsumi’s hallmark style, characterized by fluid line work, an emphasis on character expression, and a deliberate, almost haunting composition. In this iteration, the design focus remains on the interplay between ancient spiritual threats and modern-day Japan, a theme Natsumi navigated with critical success throughout her career. The series has been received as a sophisticated expansion of the original narrative, appreciated by long-term fans for its ability to maintain the somber, intellectual tone that established the Yakumo Tatsu universe decades prior.
