Where it came from
Yandere Kanojo began as a web manga self-published by the artist Shinobi on their personal website and the Japanese platform Pixiv. The series gained significant traction for its subversion of the 'yandere' trope, focusing on the comedic and endearing domestic relationship between a delinquent schoolgirl, Rei Ryuzaki, and a serious-minded boy, Manabu Tanaka. Its success as a webcomic eventually led to a professional serialization in Square Enix’s Gangan Online magazine starting in 2011.
The character design reflects a blend of traditional high-school archetypes and offbeat humor, with Shinobi utilizing a distinct, expressive art style that highlights the contrast between the lead characters' personalities. The series was well-received for its lighthearted tone and ability to transform what is typically a dark psychological archetype into a source of wholesome, albeit chaotic, romantic comedy. It remains a notable example of the transition from grassroots web-based manga to mainstream commercial success in the Japanese publishing industry.
