Where it came from
Yellow is a manga series created by Makoto Tateno, originally serialized in the Japanese publication Be x Boy starting in the late 1990s. The series belongs to the boys' love genre and follows the lives of two drug enforcement agents, Taki and Goh, who navigate a high-stakes professional partnership alongside their evolving personal relationship. The work emerged during a period of expanding mainstream visibility for the genre, focusing on a blend of action-oriented crime drama and character-driven romance.
The aesthetic of the series is characteristic of Tateno’s drafting style, emphasizing clean lines and expressive character designs that balance the grit of the duo's narcotics investigations with the emotional sensitivity central to the narrative. Upon its release, Yellow was well-received by fans of the genre for its departure from purely domestic settings, instead utilizing the suspenseful atmosphere of an urban procedural to frame its central relationship. It remains a notable entry in Tateno's bibliography for its distinct thematic shift within the landscape of late 90s manga.
