Where it came from
Yes! High Step Jun! was serialized in the monthly shojo manga magazine Nakayoshi during the mid-1980s, reflecting the era's fascination with sports-themed storytelling and aspirational youth narratives. The series, illustrated by Yasuichi Oshima, was conceived to align with the athletic trends prevalent in Japanese popular media at the time, specifically highlighting the discipline and growth of its central female protagonist within the context of competitive high jumping.
Oshima Yasuichi utilized a distinct, energetic style that prioritized fluid movement to mirror the sport's kinetic nature, distinguishing the work from the more traditional romance-heavy titles also appearing in Nakayoshi DX. While the series served as a cornerstone of the magazine's broader push toward sports manga, it remains a nostalgic touchstone for readers of that period, remembered more for its specific thematic departure than for widespread mainstream critical acclaim.
