Yokozuna Yocchan

Yokozuna Yocchan was created by mangaka Miyasaka Eiichi, emerging during the mid-20th century when sports-themed gag manga were finding significant popularity in Japan. The series centers on the titular character, a small but spirited boy with aspirations of reaching the pinnacle of professional sumo, reflecting the cultural obsession with the sport while subverting traditional tropes of strength through humor and slapstick misfortune.

Miyasaka Eiichi utilized a caricature-heavy art style to distinguish Yocchan from the more serious martial arts dramas of the era. The design choices emphasize the contrast between the rigid, ceremonial world of sumo and the chaotic, expressive personality of the protagonist. While the series remains a niche artifact of its period, it is respected by collectors of vintage shonen works for capturing the optimistic, character-driven storytelling that defined the manga landscape of the post-war decades.
