Where it came from
Yuukan Club was first serialized by Ichijo Yukari in the manga magazine Bessatsu Margaret beginning in 1982. The series emerged during a transformative period for shoujo manga, blending elements of high-school comedy with mystery and satire. It follows the antics of six wealthy and eccentric students at the elite Seishikan Academy, who use their status and resources to solve crimes and navigate social absurdities.
The official colored editions were produced to revitalize the classic series for modern audiences, highlighting Ichijo’s sophisticated line work and character design. Ichijo is celebrated for her polished, fashion-forward aesthetic, which she utilized to define the glamorous, larger-than-life personas of her leads. Upon its release, the series became a seminal work in the genre, earning the Kodansha Manga Award and cementing its place as a staple of 1980s Japanese pop culture.
