Where it came from
Zapt! was released in 1993 as part of a brief experimental period in the comics industry, spearheaded by Keith Giffen during his tenure at DC Comics. The series was designed to showcase Giffen's signature kinetic, highly stylized aesthetic, which pushed against the traditional grid layouts of the time. It was created in an era where publishers were eager to capitalize on the success of creator-driven, unconventional graphic storytelling that challenged reader expectations.
The visual language of the book was heavily influenced by Giffen's love for European comics and his desire to strip away narrative clutter, focusing instead on rapid-fire action and bold, angular character designs. Upon its release, it was received as a niche technical exercise, appreciated by dedicated fans of Giffen's idiosyncratic style while remaining somewhat inaccessible to general readers who were accustomed to more conventional sequential storytelling.
