Where it came from
Zero, authored by Yamazaki Takako, emerged in the late 1980s during a significant period of evolution for shōjo manga. First serialized in the magazine LaLa, the series reflects the sophisticated, melancholic aesthetic that characterized Yamazaki's work, which often moved away from typical school-life tropes toward more intense, character-driven psychological narratives.
The series is noted for its intricate, moody paneling and a distinct visual style that emphasizes the internal turmoil of its characters. It was well-regarded by critics for its thematic depth and remains a touchstone for readers interested in the darker, more introspective side of classic 1980s manga, cementing Yamazaki’s reputation as a master of atmospheric storytelling.
