Where it came from
Zetsuai - Zodiac emerged from the prolific doujinshi scene of the 1990s, serving as a self-published companion piece to Minami Ozaki's groundbreaking manga series, Zetsuai 1989. These fan-made works were created by the mangaka herself to further explore the intense, often tumultuous romantic dynamics between the central characters, Koji Nanjo and Takuto Izumi, outside the constraints of the professional serialization.
Ozaki's aesthetic in these volumes is characterized by her signature dramatic linework, high-contrast shading, and an emphasis on the psychological anguish of her protagonists. While these doujinshi were initially produced for distribution at comic markets like Comiket, they became highly sought after by fans for their deeper focus on character intimacy and experimental narrative styles that defined the dark, emotional tone of the Zetsuai universe.
