Fritz Lang's Metropolis was produced at the UFA studios in Germany and released in 1927. Emerging from the Weimar Republic's era of artistic innovation, the film was conceived as a monumental vision of a futuristic city divided by extreme class stratification. Lang intended to create a visual spectacle that utilized groundbreaking special effects, such as the Schüfftan process, to depict a sprawling, industrial dystopia that remains a touchstone of German Expressionism.

The film's iconic design, particularly the Maschinenmensch or 'Robot Maria,' was created by sculptors Walter Schulze-Mittendorff and Erich Kettelhut. Their vision aimed to bridge the gap between human anatomy and cold, futuristic machinery, resulting in a design that has influenced science fiction aesthetics for nearly a century. While the film was initially criticized for its complex narrative and went through various edits upon its release, its influence grew significantly over subsequent decades as critics recognized its profound technical and thematic achievements.
