Where it came from
The 1893 motion picture experiments are primarily associated with the work of Thomas Edison and his assistant William Kennedy Dickson, specifically the development of the Kinetoscope. Produced at the Black Maria studio in West Orange, New Jersey, these short films—such as Blacksmith Scene or Horse Shoeing—were designed as technical proofs for a nascent medium. They captured mundane, repetitive actions intended to demonstrate the capability of the Kinetoscope to reproduce lifelike movement for individual viewers through a peephole cabinet.
These early celluloid strips were shaped by the constraints of the 35mm film format, which Dickson pioneered to ensure stability and synchronization. The aesthetic was strictly utilitarian, focusing on high-contrast black-and-white silhouettes that could be easily rendered by the equipment of the time. Upon their limited exhibition, these films were received as scientific marvels rather than artistic endeavors, marking the foundational moment where still photography transitioned into the kinetic experience of moving images.
