La hija del policía o en poder de los ñáñigos

Released in 1917, the silent film Cleopatra stands as a significant, albeit largely lost, landmark of early cinematic production. Produced by Fox Film Corporation, the film was an ambitious attempt to leverage the cultural fascination with Egyptian themes and the star power of Theda Bara, who was already a household name due to her persona as cinema's original 'vamp'. The production was noted for its extravagant, historically informed costumes and massive sets, reflecting the studio's push toward grand-scale historical epics that defined the silent era's peak.

Directed by J. Gordon Edwards, the film’s visual language was heavily influenced by the aesthetic trends of the early 20th century, drawing inspiration from contemporary stage productions and Orientalist art. While the film was a massive commercial success that cemented Bara's status as a quintessential star, the original 35mm prints were lost in the 1937 Fox vault fire. Today, it remains a poignant symbol of the ephemeral nature of early film, remembered primarily through surviving stills and promotional ephemera.
