Where it came from
The 1925 silent film version of The Phantom of the Opera, produced by Universal Pictures, emerged during a golden age of horror cinema. It was adapted from Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel and served as a high-profile vehicle for Lon Chaney, whose penchant for elaborate character transformation was already well-established. The production was intended to cement Universal’s reputation for producing lavish, suspense-filled gothic spectacles.
The film’s design is most noted for its intricate set construction, specifically the reproduction of the Paris Opera House, and Chaney’s iconic self-designed makeup. By utilizing dental plates and facial appliances to achieve a skull-like appearance, Chaney created a figure that terrified audiences of the mid-1920s. The film was a significant critical and commercial success, noted for its groundbreaking use of two-strip Technicolor in the famous masquerade ball sequence.
