Pierrot, Harlequin and a Ball

The Story of the Kelly Gang, released in 1906, is widely recognized as the world's first feature-length narrative film. Produced in Australia by Charles Tait and his brothers, the film was an ambitious undertaking that ran for over an hour, a significant departure from the short, ten-minute reels that dominated the cinematic landscape of the time. It was crafted to capitalize on the public fascination with the notorious bushranger Ned Kelly, presenting a dramatized retelling of his life and exploits that bridged the gap between stage theater and the burgeoning medium of motion pictures.

The production utilized a mix of live actors and innovative staging, and it was often accompanied by live narration and sound effects to heighten the dramatic impact for early cinema audiences. While only a small portion of the original nitrate footage has survived the passage of time, the film's legacy as a pioneer of long-form storytelling is firmly established. It was met with immense popularity upon its release, setting a template for the adventure genre and demonstrating the commercial viability of the feature film format on a global scale.
