Janet Leigh’s performance as Marion Crane, juxtaposed with Anthony Perkins’ turn as Norman Bates, challenged contemporary audience expectations by subverting the traditional narrative structure early in the runtime. Upon its release, the film was initially met with polarized reactions from critics who were unsettled by its graphic violence, yet it was an overwhelming financial success that fundamentally altered the language of horror and slasher cinema.
