The Magic Jacket

Released in 1973, The Exorcist stands as a landmark of the horror genre, adapted by William Peter Blatty from his own 1971 novel. Directed by William Friedkin, the production was famously fraught with delays and onset accidents, which only served to heighten the intensity of the finished film. It emerged during a decade of increasingly dark and psychological American cinema, challenging contemporary social norms regarding faith, science, and the influence of media on the public consciousness.

The film's visual identity, most notably the iconic posters featuring a silhouette of Father Merrin standing before the MacNeil residence, was designed by Bill Gold. Gold aimed to capture a sense of looming dread rather than explicit gore, focusing on the stark contrast of light and shadow to represent the struggle between good and evil. Upon its release, the film was met with both profound shock and immense critical success, fundamentally altering the trajectory of horror films in Hollywood and establishing itself as a permanent fixture in modern pop culture.
