Where it came from
The 1895 films produced by Auguste and Louis Lumière, most notably 'La Sortie de l'usine Lumière à Lyon,' represent the foundational moment of modern cinema. Developed using the Cinématographe, a portable three-in-one device capable of recording, developing, and projecting film, these early shorts were created to demonstrate the viability of moving pictures as a medium for capturing everyday reality.
The design of these early films was dictated by the technical limitations and aesthetic curiosity of the Lumière brothers, who functioned as both engineers and cinematographers. Their works were received with a mix of astonishment and skepticism during the inaugural public screenings in Paris, ultimately establishing the template for the actuality film and proving that projected motion pictures could sustain the public's attention.
